When NHS Options End: Why UK Glioblastoma
Patients Turn To GoFundMe For Private Treatments
Asta Pratapaviciene is raising £100,000 on GoFundMe
after her partner Raimondas was diagnosed with
glioblastoma—an aggressive and fast-moving brain
cancer.
The NHS covers standard care,
but for glioblastoma patients,
access to new therapies or
clinical trials is often limited or
simply out of reach.
In England, glioblastoma affects 5 in every 100,000 people. Just 29 percent get full
treatment. Shockingly, 21 percent receive no treatment at all.
"We met eight years ago and built a life together,"
Asta says. "Now he needs treatment we just can't
afford—but it might save him."
The campaign has raised over £6,000 from more than
160 donors. With glioblastoma, every month counts.
Median survival is 7 to 16 months depending on
treatment.
Funds will go toward private treatment plans not offered through the NHS—giving Raimondas a shot at
options the system can't currently provide.
